Date:  19th March 2016

Event:  Choral Extravaganza

Location:  The Athenaeum, Warminster

Press Release:

There is much talk nowadays about the health benefits of choral singing and it is appropriate that Warminster should have a community choir that serves it in this respect. To be effective and successful, however, it has to involve the whole community and, judging by its latest presentation at the Warminster Athenaeum recently, this is something the Warminster Community Choir is achieving spectacularly.

Entitled a Choral Extravaganza, it also contained contributions from the school choirs of Heytesbury, Crockerton, Kingdown and Sutton Veny, ACTS Theatre Arts School as well as the choir’s own recently established Youth Choir. WCC opened and closed the programme, with an eclectic choice of music, ranging from such traditional favourites as Shenandoah and Mull of Kintyre to adaptations of modern pop. A medley from the musical South Pacific went down particularly well with an enthusiastic full house at the Athenaeum.

The choir would like to thank all those who came along and supported the event that raised £1000 towards Touching Tones Music Therapy Trust, a local group that funds for music therapy projects in schools, hospices, in the home and community groups for children and young adults in Wiltshire.

Like most “community” choirs members are not expected to be skilled musicians, but they do manage to achieve considerable musicality, often using harmony that has been devised by the musical director, Joanna Turner, who founded the choir in 2012. There was also praise from some audience members for excellent diction and phrasing.

The choir has just begun rehearsals for its summer “term” and new members would be welcome. Age is no barrier, the youngest currently being in his teens and the oldest approaching 90. It meets at St John’s School, Boreham Road, at 7.30 on Monday evenings.

Date:  23rd July 2016

Event:  Summer Busk

Location:  Outside Warminster Library

The Choir's annual summer busk in the town centre was today. Usually, we would have been in the middle of the Three Horseshoes Walk, unfortunately, this was not possible this year, due to a greengrocer stall. Instead we were located outside the library near the mall entrance. A total of £148.85 was raised from a collection by passers by. The Choir had selected local charity Alzheimer's Support for this event and a cheque was subsequently sent.

Event:  Singalongathon 2016

Location:  St. Johns new school hall

In what is becoming a regular event, Warminster Community Choir hosted their "Singalongathon" event on Monday 24th October. The event, which raises money for the BBC Children In Need appeal was another great success. Members of the public (who are not members of the choir) joined in with Choir members to sing a number of classic songs (words were provided on a large projector). Songs such as Oklahoma, Mamma Mia, selection from Les Miserables and other favourites, such as Let It Go were sung with gusto and enthusiasm. In total, £385 was raised for the appeal and the Choir would like to thank all those that came along to support such as worthy cause.
